Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has warned Rangers face a “day of reckoning” financially if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Gers boss Philippe Clement “has his hands full” to make his time at Ibrox a success.
Rangers must overcome Dynamo Kyiv next week to set up a playoff clash with FC Twente or Salzburg for a place in the league phase of the Champions League.
If they lose either game, Clement’s side will drop into the Europa League.
The Glasgow giants last made the Champions League group stage in the 2022-23 campaign but conceded 22 goals and lost every game.
Rangers recorded a loss of £3.1million for that season despite returning to Europe’s top table.
Clement ‘has his hands full’ at Rangers as new warning issued
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Clement has his hands full here.
“If Rangers are kicked out of Europe early, there will be a day of reckoning coming pretty quickly for them in terms of raising funds.
“We know the issue in terms of Scottish football – you need a squad suitable for Europe right from the start of the season.
“If you’re kicked out, you’ve then got to pay for that squad just to play in Scotland for the rest of the season.
“We all understand the problem, but it’s not being addressed properly.”
