City close in on Amankwah signing

Norwich City are in advanced discussions with RB Salzburg over the signing of midfielder Forson Amankwah.

City have agreed a permanent deal understood to be worth just under £4m for the 21-year-old, plus performance-based bonuses, and are re-investing some of the money recouped for Gabriel Sara. Norwich are still expected to make further additions before the end of the window.

The Canaries are hopeful of landing the Ghanian midfielder, who they have tracked for a prolonged period of time, but he is unlikely to be involved in their Championship opener against Oxford United on Saturday.

As established journalist Owuraku Ampofo of FlashScore first reported, the midfielder is set to travel to England to finalise his move in the coming days.

Amankwah is a versatile box-to-box midfielder and Norwich are in a market for a Sara replacement after his big-money move to Galatasaray was confirmed on Sunday. City have moved quickly to secure his replacement.

He has also played in a range of positions throughout his career, including as a right winger, attacking midfielder and even as a left back on occasion.

Johannes Hoff Thorup worked with a host of Ghanaian talent during his time working at Nordsjaellend and is believed to be a big fan of Amankwah, having monitored him for a prolonged period of time.

The lure of Championship football and regular game time has pursued Amankwah to complete the move.

Norwich looks to have beaten competition from a host of sides, including Anderlecht, Sturm Graz, Nordsjaelland, Freiburg, Augsburg, and Stuttgart, for his signature after Salzburg permitted him to depart the club.

The 21-year-old began his career at Ghanian side WAFA, making his professional debut in 2019 before earning a move to Austria in 2021, as the WAFA took part in the Next Generation Trophy at the Red Bull Football Academy, where he impressed Salzburg enough to convince them to sign him.

Loan spells followed at FC Liefering and Rheindorf Altach, which were then managed by German football legend Miroslav Klose. His impressive performances on loan saw him re-integrated into Salzburg’s squad.

Amankwah made 23 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga last season, recording four goal contributions. He played four times in the Champions League, including twice against Inter and Real Sociedad.

The midfielder made his international debut for Ghana against Nigeria and Uganda in March, playing a combined 88 minutes in those matches.

He only signed a contract extension with the Austrian champions in October until 2027, but a lack of game time has supposedly seen him pursue fresh opportunities, with City winning the race for his signature.

Norwich are in the market for other midfield options, but Liverpool youngster Bobby Clark isn’t thought to be among them.
