Rangers had been linked to a number of players coming out of Latin America when the summer transfer window first opened.
But as July winds to a close, a number of those names who were linked with Ibrox at one stage have now settled their futures elsewhere.
Rangers director of recruitment Nils Koppen even flew out to Cancun in an attempt to strike relationships with some of the key transfer players in the region.
KGarcía signs South America contract
Rangers fans will remember the name Damián García from earlier in the transfer window.
The talented midfielder was a stand-out for the Uruguay U20 side which won the World Cup with Peñarol representatives known to be in Cancun.oppen’s presence at TransferRoom famously led to the capture of Colombian winger Oscar Cortes.
It led to much chatter surrounding a potential move to Rangers but it always appeared like Damián García was ready to sign on the dotted line at Uruguay’s biggest club.
Now, weeks on from reports that García would be staying at Peñarol, the Uruguayans have made the deal official.
Damián García, 21, has extended his stay in Peñarol until the December of 2026.
Given those links to Rangers we suspect the Gers might be sniffing around when any move is eventually set to happen.
García’s agent has previously been clear that Peñarol will be getting cut of any move to Europe and we reckon this deal is designed with that in mind.
Rangers-linked Latin trio wind up elsewhere
Damián García completes a trio of high profile transfer links to Rangers this summer who wound up moving elsewhere.
The Gers failed in an early summer bid to bring Panamanian defender José Córdoba to the club from Bulgarian outfit Levski Sofia.
Whilst Rangers had shown the centre-back around Ibrox and given the 23-year-old a tour of the club’s facilities, the Gers pulled out of the Córdoba deal amid interest from Norwich.
José Córdoba would go on to sign for the Canaries with the Rangers deal reportedly falling apart when Levski moved the goalposts surrounding a deal.
Rangers were also strongly linked with a move for Thomas Galdames earlier in the transfer window.
The Chilean defender, 25, plied his trade with Godoy Cruz in Argentina and Rangers had been linked to a move for Galdames alongside Royal Antwerp.
However the left-sided centre-back has reportedly secured a move to Russian Premier League side PFC Krylia Sovetov Samara and has just said his goodbyes in South America.
Galdames posted an emotional message on Instagram despite the move to Russia being as of yet unconfirmed.
Rangers have a number of Latin American players on their books with Brazilian duo Danilo and Jefte being joined by the aforementioned Cortes.
But now a third Rangers link from the region has just signed a contract elsewhere to put to bed rumours around a switch to Ibrox; at least for now.
