EFL PUNDIT HIGHLIGHTS THE STARTLING ISSUE THAT SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY CURRENTLY HAVE

EFL pundit Ryan Dilks has highlighted the startling issue that Sheffield Wednesday currently have.

Sheffield Wednesday look set to drastically improve in the 2024/25 Championship season.

This time last summer, there was zero hope and zero reason to believe that the Owls would go on to perform in the Championship, with Xisco Munoz at the helm.

He took charge after Darren Moore left Sheffield Wednesday, helping to oversee a poor summer transfer window too.

Eventually, Sheffield Wednesday finished in 20th place of the Championship table, largely thanks to Danny Rohl and his incredible turnaround at the club.

So far this summer, Sheffield Wednesday have signed nine new players and look set to add more, with Sheffield Wednesday trying to re-sign Ike Ugbo from Troyes on a permanent deal.

Either way, many expect the Owls to massively improve on their 20th place finish next season, whether that’s a mid-table finish or even a top six push.

But the Owls still have one major issue to resolve this summer, according to EFL pundit Ryan Dilks.

Ryan Dilks highlights ‘startlingly low’ number of midfielders at Sheffield Wednesday

Although Sheffield Wednesday have signed nine new players this summer, only two are central midfielders, which is a position that Rohl was low on last season.

Since, the Owls have said goodbye to the likes of Will Vaulks and George Byers, as well as loanees Jeff Hendrick and Momo Diaby.

Right now, Sheffield Wednesday have just three natural central midfielders on their books in Barry Bannan, Svante Ingelsson, and Nathaniel Chalobah.

The likes of Di’Shon Bernard and Liam Palmer can fill in at central midfield, though.

Discussing this, Dilks said on The Second Tier Podcast: “We’ve spoken a lot about how active Wednesday have been this summer; certainly been eye-catching, the number of players that they’ve brought in.

“They’ve still got a startlingly low number of central midfielders, though, they’ve only got three.”

Will Danny Rohl be worried about Sheffield Wednesday central options

There’s certainly better-stocked positions on the pitch for Sheffield Wednesday.

And what’s perhaps more alarming is that the Owls seem to lack a bit of depth through their entire spine, arguably still needing at least one more centre-back and more more striker.

Sheffield Wednesday needed to trim down their previously-large first-team squad this summer, and they’ve done that, so now it’s about adding an extra bit of star quality.

In midfield, Bannan may be leaving next summer and so Rohl and the club should bear that in mind, and perhaps sign a potential replacement for him this summer.

Bringing one in now would give him time to learn from Bannan himself, as well as bed into the team and into a Rohl-style o play.

A new centre-back, central midfielder, and a striker would complete a very positive summer for the Owls.
