Chelsea transfer rules out second Leicester City raid in huge boost to Steve Cooper

Filip Jorgensen looks set to move from Villarreal to Stamford Bridge, meaning Enzo Maresca won’t be back to take Mads Hermansen away from the King Power Stadium

Leicester City can breathe a sigh of relief over the future of goalkeeper Mads Hermansen with Enzo Maresca not returning for a second raid of his former club.

Chelsea wanted a new goalkeeper this summer, one who had the ability in possession to prosper in Maresca’s system. As his first-choice target at City and having been integral to the team’s Championship title win, it seemed Hermansen could be the man they chased.

But Chelsea have agreed a fee with Villarreal for goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen and are now in the process of booking a medical. That should end any interest they had in Hermansen and restrict their business with City to just the signing of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

According to reports from Danish outlet Bold, Hermansen was Chelsea’s preferred target to provide competition for Robert Sanchez, but they were put off by a £40m price-tag. Jorgensen looks set to arrive at Stamford Bridge for around half of that fee.

Bold also say that Chelsea are not the only club sniffing around Hermansen after his successful first season at City, in which he was named in the Championship team of the year. Again, it seems City’s valuation is a barrier to any bids materialising.

That Hermansen looks set to stay will be music to the ears of City fans. Danny Ward struggled as the club’s number one the last time they were in the Premier League, and Hermansen is seen in the fanbase as a big positive in City’s fight for survival.

Ward does look set to be City’s deputy goalkeeper for at least the first half of the season though. While his future seemed in doubt having not played a single game last term, Jakub Stolarczyk’s ankle surgery will keep the Pole out for six months, meaning Hermansen needs a new back-up.

Ward will get the nod over Daniel Iversen, who City are trying to offload. Reports suggest City are hoping to raise £1.5m from the Dane’s sale and while Derby had been interested, they have now turned their attention to other targets.
