The Black Cats youngster shone for Regis Le Bris side as Sunderland were victorious against Blackpool.

Sunderland came out on top on their away trip to Bloomfield Road as they beat League One outfit Blackpool 1-0.

They struggled against a resolute Blackpool back-line, something that Regis Le Bris has identified as a key issue for the Black Cats ahead of the new season, however they were still able to come away victorious as Jack Clarke bagged a late winner.

Le Bris also made it clear that he will opt for a smaller squad size this season after the likes of Luis Hemir was dropped to the U21’s for their friendly against Hartlepool United.

There were several impressive performances of individuals who have seemed to grasp Le Bris’ style of play immediately and effectively, such as the likes of Alan Browne, who gained many plaudits for his performance against Blackpool.

However, there was one Sunderland youngster in particular who certainly caught the eye with his performance.

Sunderland star Chris Rigg hailed for his performance against Blackpool

17-year-old Chris Rigg was able to gain several admirers following his resolute, yet dynamic performance in Sunderland’s pre-season friendly against Blackpool.

Per Sunderland Echo, Phil Smith showed his praise for the youngster as he said that Rigg was ‘taking every chance at the moment’ by proving to be a key figure in Sunderland’s spine this season.

He managed to compliment Browne perfectly well in the centre-of-the-park, as whilst the former Preston North End captain was able to increase the speed of play by spraying the ball across the pitch, Rigg ‘injected real intensity to the game and played a part in the winner.’

Regis Le Bris can nurture Chris Rigg into a Sunderland star player

Le Bris has already praised Rigg’s work ethic and attitude in the side, despite being just 17-years-old, as he said that he ‘has a good level of energy, he’s very aware of the details’.

It’s clear that Le Bris has identified Rigg as a ‘very interesting player’ and that he will play a key role in the side this season, and there aren’t many better Championship managers that can thrive in getting the best out of youngsters and maxing out their potential.

Le Bris’ years of work in Lorient’s youth set-up have made it evident that he is perfect in nurturing young talents, and there is no doubt that he can do the same with Rigg.

The French boss has acted quickly in identifying the youngster’s perfect role in the side, and has almost moulded the side around him.

Often, this can make or break young stars, however the character and determination that Rigg has shown during his time with the first-team squad shows that he can take on this level of responsibility and thrive in Sunderland’s side.
