RANGERS NEED TO PAY £12.6m TO COMPLETE SIGNING, FORMAL BID SUBMITTED – REPORT

Rangers have learned that it will take a bid of £12.6m to secure the services of Porto winger Goncalo Borges, according to O Jogo.

Writing on their website (28 July), Andre Villas-Boas is not expecting interested clubs to activate Borges’ £42.2m release clause, but the “formal” Rangers bid falls below the Portuguese side’s expectations.

Rangers have submitted a concrete proposal for Borges, as well as Strasbourg and talks will continue with the clubs in the coming days, Porto are satisfied with the player’s performance in Portugal but are willing to sell the player for the right price.

Rangers would need to break Scottish transfer record for Borges

There isn’t an area on the pitch that isn’t on the agenda for improvement this summer at the Ibrox, and Borges has been identified as the latest potential addition.

Hamza Igamane has been the only attacking addition so far, with Fabio Silva and Abdallah Sima returning to their parent clubs, Philippe Clement needs to prioritise recruits to his front line.

Sam Lammers has recently completed his move to FC Twente and more outgoings are expected with Cyriel Dessers also on the chopping block.

Rangers would need to make Borges the most expensive signing in Scottish football behind Tor Andre Flor’s move to Rangers from Chelsea in 2000, a fee that the Gers will not be able to raise.

That is a lot of money to spend on a player who has registered just three assists across 50 first-team appearances for Porto, but Clement believes he has found his marquee signing and is willing to negotiate a lower price.

A big money move for a player could calm the nerves of Rangers fans who watch every day not knowing which players are coming or going in what is proving to be the club’s biggest summer overhaul.

At 23 years old, Borges offers Champions League experience and experience in the Portuguese top flight and would be an astute acquisition for Clement should Porto be willing to lower their asking price.
