Coventry City pre-season news from CoventryLive as Mark Robins looks ahead to the weekend’s test against German opposition as the Sky Blues ramp up their warm-up schedule
Mark Robins has set out Coventry City’s “aspirations” for the season ahead, hoping that this weekend’s test against German outfit SV Darmstadt 98 will further prepare his players for a successful Championship campaign.
The Sky Blues boss wants a promotion push and insists a tough pre-season will help prepare the players for what lies ahead in 2024/25. The club fell short of making the play-offs last time around after a sluggish start and end to the season, having got to the final and narrowly missed out on the Premier League by losing in a penalty shootout the year before when also forced to play catch-up after a poor opening couple of months.
But Robins intends to hit the ground running this time and believes the secret lies in the preparation, specifically playing against tougher opponents. City have stepped up the level of opposition in this summer’s pre-season, having already played out a goalless draw with Spanish top flight side Getafe in between comfortable wins against League Two Port Vale and League One Stevenage. Next up is a side that competed in the Bundesliga last season before Robins’ men entertain Premier league Everton at the CBS Arena on Tuesday night (July 30) and Bundesliga side Werder Bremen Saturday week (Aug 3), before concluding their warm-up schedule against Serie A side AS Roma behind closed doors (Aug 6).
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s match in Germany, he said: “They got relegated to Bundesliga 2 but they will be a really good team. It’s another difficult game but we wanted a difficult pre-season because, as I said before, last season Leicester went to the tournament in Thailand and played against Liverpool and we were preparing to play against them playing against teams that weren’t that level, although they were tough games.
“I think we have got to try to test ourselves as quickly as we can. Obviously the aspiration is to get promoted so we need to be ready. Things are OK, we just need to get the other players who are injured back on the grass and training.”

There are five senior players currently receiving treatment with Haji Wright and Ben Sheaf nursing ankle injuries, Victor Torp a groin strain, Raphael Borges Rodrigues a thigh strain and Oliver Dovin an impingement to a shoulder, although the goalkeeper was due to train on Thursday and is hoped to make his non-competitive debut against Darmstadt.
Robins added: “We need to try to improve on last season and we have two games at home at the CBS when we get back, which we haven’t been able to do for a long time, other than the Wolves game, so I am pleased with that and the calibre of the games.
“So if we can keep building and training as well as we have been doing, and the players keep getting that confidence and playing the way they have been then it bodes well. There are some really good signs and there have been some really good performances from all of the players really.”
