Vaclav Cerny is set to undergo a medical at Rangers on Thursday ahead of joining on loan from Wolfsburg, according to inFotblal.cz.

The Czech football website reported on 25 July that Cerny, 26, will “wear the jersey of” Rangers in the upcoming season after deciding to leave Wolfsburg on a temporary basis.

It is understood that once he’s passed his medical, the ex-Ajax winger will complete his move to Ibrox on “Friday at the latest” (26 July).

Rangers and Wolfsburg have reportedly agreed a straight loan deal, meaning there’ll be no option to buy the 17-times Czechia international permanently next year.

Philippe Clement ramps up Rangers transfer efforts as rebuild takes shape

Clement was always going to have a lot of work to do this summer.

It doesn’t help when key players like Todd Cantwell start handing in transfer requests or your long-standing club captain James Tavernier is also expected to leave [Sky Sports].

However, there’s no room at Ibrox for anyone who doesn’t want to be there and while Tavernier did captain the Gers to a league title and a European final and has become one of the highest goalscoring defenders in footballing history, he’s an absolute trainwreck of a defender and the club could be far better off without him.

It’s a big decision to offload players like this but Clement isn’t shying away from those kinds of calls – calls that could easily be thrown in his face if the new season doesn’t start well.

Cerny is a player with a lot of experience. He’s played almost 100 times in the Eredivisie, has had a season in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and has 17 appearances and six goals for Czechia.

Although last season wasn’t a success for the right-winger, he clearly wasn’t seen as more than a squad player at Wolfsburg as he made just 12 Bundesliga starts among his 22 appearances, which also yielded four goals.

Rangers fans will hope to see a lot more than that – and they probably should.
