The REAL Rangers reason for Todd Cantwell transfer request reveal floated after sudden Philippe Clement U-turn

The playmaker is set to leave Ibrox this summer and has been dropped to the B team

Philippe Clement made quick-fire return to his post-match Rangers press conference to drop news of Todd Cantwell’s transfer request after talks with Nils Koppen.

That is the theory floated by Jim Duffy as the pundit admitted he was surprised to see the Belgian face the media for a second time after the friendly defeat to Birmingham City. Following the pre-season clash at St Andrews, the Rangers boss answered questions and left – before returning to reveal that the playmaker was looking for a new “adventure” and had been dropped to the B team until an exit route is found.

And experienced manager Duffy reckons that a chat with the head of football recruitment took place before Clement dropped the bombshell news. Speaking to Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, the former Dundee, Dumbarton and Ayr United boss said: “Maybe he has had a discussion with the director of football and just thought now was the time, or there was a suggestion the news would get out through various sources.

“So, we are not quite sure why Philippe Clement decided to go back in, but he was honest with the supporters and I think the supporters deserve that. There is no point in leaving him out of the squad and keeping everything under wraps when you know that player is unhappy, and you believe he is not going to be part of your plans going forward.”

Baffled Duffy also reckons that Cantwell will struggle to find his next move after an “underwhelming” spell in the Scottish Premiership. He went on: “I know he (Philippe Clement) is maybe being diplomatic in saying he is looking for a new adventure, I think he used that term, but if he can get a bigger club than Rangers I would be amazed.

“He has not exactly set the heather on fire at Rangers. He has been OK, and had little moments in games here and there, but over the course I would have to say he has been a wee bit underwhelming.

“And I like him, I think he has got talent but for me I’m not quite sure where to fit him in (to the team) and he is a bit all over the place at times. He is not a player you can bank on. I don’t think it’s a big loss for Rangers.”
