The latest Manchester United transfer news as we take a look at some of the stories around the club over the past 24 hours as the transfer window continues
Pre-season is well underway, meaning that there is not long to go until the 2024/25 campaign is upon us.
Manchester United were in friendly action on Saturday as they came out as 2-0 winners against Rangers. Eyes now turn to the USA tour as Erik ten Hag prepares his team for what will be another long Premier League season.
Back in Manchester, work will be going on around transfers. United have added striker Joshua Zirkzee and defender Leny Yoro to their squad so far, but have been linked with several other players including midfielder Manuel Ugarte and defender Matthijs de Ligt.
There has also been talk over who could leave the club before the transfer deadline next month. Fringe players could potentially move on in search of game time with any money raised possibly boosting the funds available for incomings.
Here’s a look at a couple of stories from in and around Old Trafford over the past 24 hours. We’ve also given our own view on the situation.
Antony makes transfer decision
The agent of United winger Antony has said that his client plans on staying with the club beyond the transfer window, amid speculation over his future. It has been reported that United could consider sending the Brazilian out on loan this summer, if his wages are paid.
But Junior Pedroso, Antony’s representative has poured cold water on that suggestion. He told Fabrizio Romano: “I see reports about potential exit on loan. Antony’s plan is clear: Manchester United”.
“He wants to stay, he’s only focused on Man United. We already spoke about that with the club”.
MEN Sport says: It’s always nice to hear that a player wants to stay at the club and fight for their place in the team, but after a season to forget a move away from United, even if only on loan may be just what Antony needs. The emergence of Amad, who will be looking for more regular starts this season, plus the return of Jadon Sancho, who could now stay at the club after making up with Ten Hag, only adds to the competition on the wings.
If Antony can’t get regular game time, then he’s going to find it hard to play himself into form. That will only reduce his value and make any sale in upcoming transfer windows harder.
United sent ‘expensive’ transfer warning
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has given an update on striker Ivan Toney. The England man has just one year remaining on his contract with the club with admissions made earlier in the season over him being sold this summer.
United have previously been linked with an interest in Toney, but Frank has warned that any deal will be ‘expensive’ for the buying club.
“You never know. He’s a Brentford player and I would love him to stay,” he said. “That would give me a very positive challenge.
“But I haven’t met a coach who doesn’t want as many good players as possible. Right now, Ivan is a Brentford player. I would be more than happy if he stayed with us. He’s a goalscorer and that’s very good to have in your team so if you want to buy him, it’s expensive.”
MEN Sport says: If United hadn’t have signed Joshua Zirkzee earlier this month, then Toney would be a brilliant signing. But the arrival of the Dutchman means that United now have no need for another striker, especially one that is going to eat into the transfer budget further.
Toney showed what he can do in his short cameo against Slovakia for England in the Euros. He also does it week-in, week-out for Brentford in the Premier League.
The striker would be a clever signing for a club on the lookout for a striker who is a proven goalscorer in the league, but United should concentrate on other areas of the pitch.
