Scott McKenna would be an excellent signing for Rangers this summer if the opportunity is there to bring him in, says Derek Ferguson.

The former Ibrox midfielder is a big fan of the Scotland international and the way he plays after watching him over many years and would love to see him arrive in Philippe Clement’s squad.

McKenna, 27, left Nottingham Forest this summer and the Light Blues were immediately linked by Motherwell’s Stephen O’Donnell when he became available [Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, 10 June].

The Light Blues are looking for experienced signings now after landing a number of young talents and Ferguson is in full support of pushing to sign the free agent.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “If we get the opportunity to get McKenna through the door that’d be a no-brainer for me.

“I’ve watched him over the years and obviously away with Scotland.

“I love experience at the back. I love aggressive players at the back.

“He’s not the greatest footballer in the world but sometimes when he gets himself into a bit of a sticky situation he’s got real pace that gets him out of that.

“Aye he’d be a great signing if Rangers could get that one done.”

Philippe Clement could replace Connor Goldson at Rangers

Clement has made moves at centre-back this summer already but neither the one-year contract extension for Leon Balogun or the free transfer signing of youngster Clinton Nsiala from AC Milan are likely to be the immediate game-changer that is needed.

Connor Goldson has been a key figure at the back for Rangers over a number of years but his form dipped markedly last term and he has been linked with moves to the likes of Al-Ettifaq [Daily Record, 24 April] and Birmingham City [Scottish Sun, 30 June].

If the Gers could secure a move for the Englishman and were able to replace him with McKenna it could bring a major boost but he is unlikely to be available for long and exits may have to be sorted first.
