Celtic fans are still waiting on their first glimpse of Kasper Schmeichel in club colours but that shouldn’t be too far away now.
The goalkeeper is travelling to the United States after confirming his move to the Bhoys on Thursday night and is due to join squad training imminently.
With matches against Manchester City and Chelsea over the next week, there’s the prospect of a quick debut.
Schmeichel signed a one-year deal with the Bhoys. However, in the official Celtic announcement, there was no mention of a one-year option held by the club beyond that. This was a detail reported by Danish media and Fabrizio Romano in the build-up to his unveiling.
Now Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that the Bhoys do have that option should the club and the player wish to extend their relationship beyond 2025.
Kasper Schmeichel could stay at Celtic until 2026
In an interview with club outlet Celtic TV, Rodgers communicated the detail when talking about how much Schmeichel is going to enjoy his stay at the Scottish champions – for however long that is.
Likely this would be a decision that Celtic and the player reach together. If he’s a success at the Bhoys and has the motivation to extend his career for another 12 months then there’s a solution baked into the deal he’s already signed.
First and foremost Schmeichel will be focused on gelling with his new teammates and specifically the defence in front of him.
Competitive fixtures are not far away now and the sooner he gets into training and working with that defensive line the better. It can be a tricky relationship to build, especially with pressure on.
With new signing Viljami Sinisalo also competing for the number one spot, Schmeichel will have to prove he is still at the top of his game to stay in the team. We expect nothing less after a strong 12 months with Anderlecht and Denmark.
