‘A real diamond’: John Hughes says Brendan Rodgers is about to sign an ‘unbelievable’ player for Celtic

The transfer chat has ramped up this week as the rumours surrounding Celtic and new signings really take hold.

We have already discussed how the likes of Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Aston Villa goalkeeper, Viljami Sinisalo, seem to be high on Celtic’s radar this week.

After weeks of plenty of rumour but not much movement, it does seem like Celtic are on the cusp of making their first summer signing this week.

And one particular linked player has gotten former Celtic defender, John Hughes, really excited.

Hughes: Kasper Schmeichel is ‘the best goalkeeper I have ever worked with’

The rumours surrounding Kasper Schmeichel joining Celtic really took off toward the end of last week after Fabrizio Romano announced that the ‘final details’ were being sorted for a move.

And Hughes believes that Celtic are about to make an ‘unbelievable’ signing if he passes his medical this week.

Hughes said [The Celtic Way print edition page 4], “The biggest bonus in all of this is that Brendan knows Kasper and has worked with him before. There is no substitute for that.

“Kasper will need to emulate Hart in the sense that he will have to enter a dressing room where Callum McGregor is the captain and listen to his skipper and help in whatever way he can. He will do that straight off the bat. He will become one of Callum’s trusted lieutenants in the park as he will buy into the culture at Celtic. He cares about people.

“Kasper is a quality person. It is all about setting standards and he will do that in abundance within the Celtic dressing room.

“Brendan has plucked a real diamond of a goalkeeper for Celtic with this one. He really has. He is the best goalkeeper I have ever worked with. He has an unbelievable talent just like his father Peter. He could play into his 40s with Celtic at this rate if he wants to.”

Schmeichel has a huge amount of experience in the game. With 105 caps for Denmark and just coming off the back of a successful Euro 2024 campaign where he reached the last 16, the 37-year-old is a safe pair of hands to take over from Joe Hart.

The former Leicester ‘keeper has also enjoyed domestic success in the game after winning the English Premier League, an FA Cup and the Community Shield with Leicester and as Hughes said, teaming up with Rodgers will be an extra bonus as the Celtic manager knows what he is all about.

With the 2024 USA Summer Tour set to kick off next week, it would be a huge boost to the squad to have Schmeichel signed and on that plane.
